Chinese Tea Tray (Removed from display)
Title
Chinese Tea Tray (Removed from display)
Description
A small rectangular tray with a light wood frame and backing boards. Against the boards and under glass is a Chinese silk textile embroidered in the "forbidden" stitch. The textile is decorated with two peripheral floral bands and a different central floral band, around an interior panel with various floral and symbolic motifs bisected by a segment of the band. The boards have separated at the back to expose the contents.
From Burke Hodgson:
"This was my grandmother's tea tray. The fabric was one of the items brought from China by her uncle Oscar Brown after the Spanish American War. It contains the infamous forbidden stitch which was later banned in China."
