Sofa
Title
Sofa
Description
Medallion back sofa, probably used "en suite" with matching pieces, has Rococo fruit and/or nut carvings on the center top crest. A ribbed, carved molding outlines the wooden frame and extends from the back down to the arms, legs, and bowed center seat rail. There are three matching brass rollers and a fourth which may be a replacement on the rear left leg. The sofa has been refinished in a medium dark brown with a high gloss finish. The sofa has been reupholstered with a wine-colored damask of the mid-19th c. style. The padding style and dimensions, gimp, and upholstered arm pads appear correct for its style and age.
According to Burke Hodgson:
"This piece definitely belonged to E. S. Lyndon and was one of a pair of sofas. It is my understanding that there was one of these sofas in each of the double parlors. They are much older than I had thought and may have been brought by Dr. Lyndon from the Lyndon Plantation near Newman (Georgia). Family scuttlebutt has it that the Lyndon brothers survived the war with their fortune pretty much intact. This sofa was in my grandmother's (Moselle Lyndon Burke) living room and my mother was sitting on it when my father proposed to her. The original upholstery was tapestry and had allegorical figures on it. The matching sofa was given to my uncle Tom Burke and was unfortunately ex-wifed out of the family."
