Whatnot Table
Title
Whatnot Table
Description
A ca. 1875 three-tier whatnot table (étagère) with walnut as primary wood and marquetry in other woods. The top shelf with openwork brass gallery and central panel depicting a lyre with flowers and foliage, surrounded by borders with mixed motifs. The lower two shelves with the same central floral medallion, surrounded by borders with mixed motifs. The four legs are of tapering cabriole design.
From Burke Hodgson:
"This what-not table belonged to my Grandmother Marie Lowe Hodgson (Mrs. Harry Hodgson, Sr.) and my mother always told me she was proud of it. The inlay work is beautiful but the varnish is so old and dark that it can hardly be seen."
